The 2009 Maui Vmax competition is a GPS speed-sailing competition that will have two concurrent events. Their will be a Speed Ladder running all year and a Speed Series consisting of at least four Speed Meetings. At the Speed Meetings, participants will score points to count towards an overall series champion. The Speed ladder is an open event which will score only the single highest speed.

The Speed Meetings may be canceled 24hours in advance if the conditions look unfavourable. Please check the website or call on the day of the event if in doubt.
Race Day Policies
Minimum winds – 15 knots on the course or at the discretion of the Race Director.
Make-up days – in the event a Speed meeting is canceled there may be a make-up date. This date will be announced at least five days in advance and will be a Sunday before October 4th.
Sanctioned devices-ONLY data collected by a Locosys GT-11/31 GPS unit will be used to score results. ONLY GPS Results software shall be used to record results.
Race Procedures
a) Course – Open course. Speed ladder results may be scored anywhere on Maui at any time during 2009. Speed meetings will be at Spreckelsville beach or alternate venue announced by the race director at least 24 hours in advance (check website or call 808 298-9392 ). Results containing tracks not found to be on the course may not be accepted. Please turn off the GPS before driving away! Do not attempt to submit results from the canal! Submission of false tracks will result in disqualification for all series events and the speed ladder in 2009.
b) One Class – Competitors may sail in only one class. The classes are as follows:
i) Open – Open to any competitor using any equipment.
ii) Production Slalom – Only production boards wider than 54cm, with fins longer than or equal to 28cm, and production sails may be used.
iii) Women – open to female competitors with any equipment.
iv) Junior – open to youths born after January 1st 1993
v) Menehune – open to children born after January 1st 1996
vi) Wave – limited to non-racing equipment. Sails may have no cambers. Boards may have only a single rear footstrap and be fitted with a wave fin. No tuttle boxed boards or upright fins allowed.
c) Duration– Speed ladder results may be scored any time during the Speed Meeting. Speed Meeting course will open no earlier than 12:00 noon and finish no earlier than 4:00pm and no later than 6:00pm, at the discretion of the race director as conditions permit. Speed Meeting results must be scored during the official open course time.
Scoring
a) Speed Ladder
Single fastest 100m speed as recorded by GT-11/31 GPS and results verified by the Race Director using GPS results software (interpolation on, doppler off). Tracks must be saved and sent to the Race Director Tom Hammerton via e-mail to speed@mauivmax.comor the GPS delivered in person at the Hot Sails Maui loft (96 Amala Place, Kahului) when available.
b) Speed Meeting
The single fastest 100m run as recorded by GT-11/31 will be used to score the competitors. The results will be verified by the Race Director using GPS Results software (interpolation on, doppler off). All tracks will be available for the public to see. The competitors will be ranked in order from fastest to slowest using their fastest 100m speed. If the course is open for less than one hour, the Speed meeting will be abandoned with no results scoring for the series. In the case of abandonment results will still be accepted for the Speed Ladder. The highest speed will automatically be entered into the Speed Ladder. Points will be awarded for each Speed meeting to count towards an overall series champion. The series winner will have the most points. There will be NO discards. In the event of a tie the order of tiebreakers are most wins, most second place, most third place, highest speed.
The first 10 places will score points.

The Speed Series will end in September 2009 and the Series winner will be announced then. The Speed Ladder will continue until December 31st 2009.
Sailing Rules
1) Safety
Boards on speed runs will be sailing at the limits of control. All possible care must be taken to avoid interference with a board on a speed run. Sailors considered to be sailing recklessly will be disqualified!
2) Sailing Conduct
a) Boards not on speed runs - Boards not on speed runs must keep well clear – 10 board lengths – of boards on speed runs.
i) Interference – A board not on a speed run must not sail in the path of, jibe in the path of, or in any other way interfere with a board on a speed run.
b) Both Boards on Speed Runs
i) Boards on opposite tacks – A starboard tack board is entitled to hold its course. A port tack board must keep well clear.
ii) Boards on the same tack – board ahead/astern – A board clear astern must keep well clear of a board ahead.
iii) Boards on the same tack - overtaking – When boards become overlapped, the windward board must keep well clear of the leeward board.
